Arizona State transfer QB Sam Leavitt to visit Tennessee football

Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt will visit Tennessee football on Jan. 7, Knox News confirmed.

Leavitt is the No. 1 ranked player in the transfer portal, according to 247Sports, which makes him a prime target for the Vols' quarterback vacancy. He is the first quarterback to visit UT since the portal opened on Jan. 2.

Leavitt has also visited Kentucky and LSU. He is a proven passer and winner who started his career at Michigan State and played the last two seasons at Arizona State.

He has completed 61% of his passes for 4,652 yards, 36 TDs and 11 interceptions in his career. And he has rushed for 816 yards and 10 TDs.

Leavitt had season-ending surgery on an injured foot late in the 2025 season. He passed for 1,628 yards, 10 TDs and three interceptions and added five rushing TDs in his final abbreviated season at Arizona State.

Tennessee needs to replace 2025 starting quarterback Joey Aguilar, who has exhausted his eligibility unless a federal court or an NCAA waiver grants him another college season. He is attached to the lawsuit filed by Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia against the NCAA in federal court, which challenges the association’s eligibility rules involving former junior college players.

But there have been no recent developments in the case. Both parties have made recent filings to the court. But no hearings have been scheduled. That means UT must approach the 2026 season as if Aguilar will not be eligible.

Tennessee has two quarterbacks projected on its 2026 roster. George MacIntyre, a former four-star recruit, will be a redshirt freshman next season. Faizon Brandon is a five-star signee enrolling at UT in January.
