ACC Network set to air documentary on UNC’s 1993 national title team

More than three decades after North Carolina cut down the nets in New Orleans in 1993, one of the most beloved teams in school history is getting the documentary treatment.

ESPN will broadcast We’re #1! 1993 North Carolina Tar Heels, a documentary chronicling the national championship-winning Tar Heels men’s basketball team, on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. ET on ACC Network, immediately following Wake Forest at No. 12 North Carolina (6 p.m., ACCN).

Produced by Raycom Sports in partnership with ESPN, the one-hour show is the latest installment in ACCN’s We’re #1! series.

Using archival footage — including first-person home videos shot during the season by the late Eric Montross — along with photographs, game broadcasts and exclusive interviews, the film revisits the team that quieted doubts about Hall of Fame head coach Dean Smith and returned UNC to the top of the college basketball world.

Entering the 1992–93 season, doubt surrounded the Carolina program. Smith had gone more than a decade without a national title, while archrival Duke had won back-to-back championships and reached six Final Fours in seven years, shifting the balance of power in college basketball — especially in the ACC and the Triangle. The Tar Heels responded by rallying around their legendary coach and winning the program’s third national championship that April.
