3 NFL head coaches who may be without jobs after Black Monday

1 week ago 2

The Monday following the end of the NFL regular season has become known as Black Monday, as coaches often lose their jobs. Now, with Week 18 on the horizon, we're less than one week away from another round of head coaches becoming victims of the informal NFL 'holiday' and starting their searches for their next jobs.

Two coaches were already canned midseason: the Titans fired Brian Callahan, and the Giants handed Brian Daboll a pink slip. Here are three NFL head coaches to keep an eye on as the season winds down and many franchises must make a tough decision.

Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland Browns: Stefanski has twice been named NFL Coach of the Year since taking over the Browns in 2020, and the franchise has earned two playoff appearances during his tenure. But the Browns have won just seven of their last 33 games since that second postseason bid, and Stefanski's handling of the rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders has recently drawn criticism.

Stefanski will be a highly-touted assistant coach if he hits the market and could be looking to hit the reset button. He's been careful in answering questions about his future with the franchise. Nothing has leaked about the Browns' plans for Stefanski's future, but this move feels inevitable.

Pete Carroll, Las Vegas Raiders, is looking to right the ship. Things hadn't exactly been stable for the franchise, as Carroll marks their fifth head coach (including former interim coach Rich Bisaccia) since the move to Las Vegas ahead of the 2020 season.

Carroll offered a veteran insight and a winning pedigree across both the collegiate and professional levels. Still, with the Raiders sitting 2-14 entering the final week of the season and having already fired two coordinators this season, many believe Carroll could be the second straight head coach to get just one full season at the helm of the franchise, and that the Raiders will soon be looking for their sixth head coach in seven seasons.

Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals feel far, far away from their 2021 run to the Super Bowl, where they were one score away from an NFL Championship. They've now missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, and this will be their first losing season since 2020.

Star quarterback Joe Burrow was clear this week that something needs to change for the Bengals moving forward, and while he didn't specifically highlight which changes are required, Bengals fans may think the change should start with the head coach.
