Yellowjackets report: UWS men's hoops building momentum

Jan. 5—After a rough start to the season, the Wisconsin-Superior men's basketball team is starting to put results together, as a 78-73 win at Macalester in St. Paul on Friday, Jan. 2 marked the team's first back-to-back victories of the season.

UWS was down by as many as seven points in the second half but recovered nicely to take the lead on an Evan Bennett layup with 7:59 to play.

Carrying a four-point edge into the final two minutes, Caiden Lecce's layup with 1:05 to go capped a key possession in which he had two offensive rebounds and ensured the Scots never had the ball and a chance to tie down the stretch.

Bennett led UWS with 19 points, while Landen Thomer notched 17 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.

UWS (4-9) begins Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on Wednesday in Minneapolis at North Central.

Wisconsin-Superior just didn't get many shots to fall on Saturday, Jan. 3 in a 70-45 nonconference loss to Lawrence at Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior.

The Yellowjackets went 3-for-20 from 3-point range in the game and shot worse than 30% from the field in three of the four quarters, finishing with a game total of 17-for-57 (30%).

UWS went to halftime down 37-26 but struggled to just eight points in period three as the game got away from them.

Kyra Latvala (Solon Springs) was UWS's leading scorer, with nine points off the bench.

The Yellowjackets did pick up a 70-38 home win over Carleton on Wednesday, Jan. 31 behind 14 points from MyKenzie Leccia and 10points and 13 rebounds from Charlotte Ferstl.

UWS (3-10) kicks off UMAC play at North Central on Wednesday night, Jan. 7.

Taylee Marks scored for Wisconsin-Superior with 38.6 seconds remaining as the Yellowjackets ended up in a 2-2 tie with Saint Benedict on Friday to open a nonconference series at Wessman Arena.

Ashton Parnell had made it 1-1 for UWS with her goal late in the second period, but the visiting Bennies pulled ahead a second time on a power play near the midpoint of the third.

Aliya Gricius made six saves in the UWS net in overtime to keep the game tied and finished with a game total of 33.

CSB won a postgame shootout.

On Saturday in St. Cloud, Helena Siska's hat trick helped the Bennies net a 3-1 victory over UWS in the back end of the home-and-home.

Siska scored the go-ahead goal to make it 2-1 at the 3:33 mark of the third and added her third goal a few minutes later.

Anna Scherling scored on the power play for UWS, while Gricius made 17 saves.

UWS (1-11-1) will host Concordia-Moorhead on Tuesday night, Jan. 6.
