The New York Yankees have been exploring the market, both in free agency and on the trade block, for a new starting pitcher.

They lost out on Edward Cabrera to the Chicago Cubs, but they weren't done discussing trades just yet. In fact, they weren't done talking with the Miami Marlins for a trade either.
According to Craig Mish of SportsGrid, the Yankees are sending four prospects to the Marlins for one starting pitcher. But that Marlins starter is not Sandy Alcantara, it's lefty Ryan Weathers.
Yankees trade 4 prospects to Marlins for lefty starter
"Miami Marlins are trading SP Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees," Mish reports. "Miami gets a big haul in return. 4 players in total. OF Dillon Lewis, OF Brendan Jones, IF Dillon Jasso, and IF Juan Matheus."

Weathers is a left-handed pitcher who has appeared in 24 games as a starter over the last two seasons in Miami.
This past season, in eight starts, he had a 3.99 ERA with a 2-2 record and 37 strikeouts in 38.1 innings pitched. In 2024, Weathers posted a 3.63 ERA in 16 starts with a 5-6 record and 80 strikeouts in 86.2 innings pitched.
Adding Weathers to the rotation options is a nice pickup, as the 26-year-old is not just an option for 2026, but will be around through the 2028 season as well.

But the cost to land Weathers was far from cheap. According to MLB Pipeline, Jones is ranked 15th, Lewis is ranked 16th, Jasso is ranked 23rd, and Matheus is unranked.

Sending three top-30 prospects for any players is a noteworthy haul, and for this Yankees-Marlins deal, the return, including Jones and Lewis, is significant.
Lewis is 22 years old and was one of the prospects in trade talks between the Marlins and Yankees over Cabrera recently. Now, he's part of the package for Weathers.
Overall, the Yankees are sending four prospects, including three inside the Yankees' top 25, all for Weathers, a 26-year-old lefty starter who's never started more than 16 games in a season before.
