Wisconsin starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. is set to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens on Friday, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Edwards played in just two games during his one year with the Badgers. The veteran was injured in the team's season opener against Miami (Ohio) on Aug. 28, then returned for just one series during its loss to Maryland on Sept. 20. He attempted only 16 total passes as a Badger, completing seven for 113 total yards and zero touchdowns.

The veteran began his career at Wake Forest in 2021. He redshirted as a true freshman, then transferred to Maryland in 2022. Edwards would appear in 15 games as a backup in 2022 and 2023, completing 38 of 76 passes for 441 yards, four touchdowns and one interception during that time. He then delivered an excellent season as the starter in 2024, throwing for 2,881 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Edwards is set to return for his sixth season of college football in 2026. Thamel reports the quarterback is 'expected to receive a medical redshirt and be ready for spring ball.'

Wisconsin will likely add to its quarterback room this offseason following Edwards' departure. Danny O'Neil, who appeared in seven games in relief of Edwards in 2025, is set to return, along with redshirt freshman Carter Smith. An experienced veteran is likely to be added to that mix.
