Will Louisville's Mikel Brown Jr. play vs Cal? Injury update

1 week ago 2

BERKELEY, CA — Mikel Brown Jr. won't return from a lower back injury for Louisville basketball's ACC opener Tuesday at California's Haas Pavilion.

Brown, a projected lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, was ruled out with 11 minutes to spare before tipoff between the No. 13 Cardinals (10-2) and the Golden Bears (12-1). The freshman point guard was wearing a back brace while he went through the team's usual warmup routine.

Brown has not seen the court since a Dec. 13 win over Memphis at the KFC Yum! Center. He entered ACC play as UofL's No. 2 scorer with 16.6 points per game on 38.1% shooting (26.8% from 3-point range) in addition to leading the team with 5.1 assists against 2.4 turnovers across 27 minutes per contest.

Coach Pat Kelsey on Monday told reporters Brown was a full participant in the team's practice Sunday before it departed for the West Coast. He was listed as probable in an initial injury report from the ACC, then downgraded to a game-time decision in Tuesday's updated report.

UofL will also be without sixth-year forward Kasean Pryor. The nature and severity of his injury was not known at the time of publication.
