Will Commanders LB Bobby Wagner play or retire in 2026?

4 days ago 2

Will Bobby Wagner play a 15th NFL season in 2026? The future Hall of Famer joined some elite company Sunday, as his Washington Commanders defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 24-17.

Wagner entered the game needing five tackles to get to 2,000 for his career. Only Ray Lewis and London Fletcher had ever reached that number before. Until Sunday, as Wagner's five tackles gave him 2,000. After the game, Fletcher, who has served as a mentor to Wagner over the years and works for Washington's broadcast team, was there to greet Wagner.

Washington only gave out one game ball for Sunday's win, and head coach Dan Quinn called on Fletcher to present that game ball to Wagner. Wagner then spoke to his teammates, who were excited for him.

With the season now over, talks immediately turned to Wagner's future. Will he play in 2026? He turns 36 in June and is a free agent in March. Reporters asked Wagner about his future after the game, and he was not ready, one way or the other, to make a decision.

"I have not thought about anything outside of today," Wagner said.

It's probably too soon for Wagner to make such a decision, especially immediately after another grueling season. Much has been made of Wagner's struggles in coverage, but he remains one of the NFL's most productive linebackers. He played virtually every snap for the Commanders this season. He's Washington's leader on and off the field, beloved by coaches and teammates.

However, the reality is that the Commanders must get better next season. That also means younger and faster. It will be interesting to see what Wagner decides in the coming months, but whether he returns to Washington in 2026 or not, his impact will be felt for years.
