Why Peyton Manning says he'd have loved to play for Sean McVay

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in his nine full seasons at the helm of his team. But more than that, McVay is known for the relationships he's built with his players and staff.

So when ESPN's Kevin Clark asked legendary quarterback Peyton Manning which current head coach in the playoffs he'd like to play for, Manning quickly picked McVay.

"I like the way Sean is accountable each week. If it doesn't go well, he gets up there and owns it," Manning said. "I never see him blaming a player. He starts with himself. And I like that in a coach. And even though as a player, I always said it's not the coach's fault —we need to play better. But when your coach is up there taking that, I think your players play harder for you.

"And I just think the job, you know, he does as an offensive coordinator, play caller, while being the head coach, it's just hard to do these days. It's hard to be a really good offensive coordinator and a good head coach at the same time."

A lot of players like McVay as a coach, but it says even more when a Hall-of-Fame quarterback voices his admiration for a current coach.

And as a quarterback, Manning understands the discipline it takes to call an effective offensive game. Combined with McVay's ability to also run the team as a whole, Manning sounded quite impressed with what he's seen in the almost-decade of McVay's tenure as head coach of the Rams.

Manning retired two years before McVay took over as the Rams' head coach. He never played against a McVay offense during his time in the league — the closest he got was when the Denver Broncos faced Washington in 2013, when McVay was the team's tight ends coach. McVay would become offensive coordinator in 2014 before taking the Rams' job in 2017.

McVay will have the chance to build on his legacy in the playoffs this year as he searches for his second Super Bowl trophy as head coach.
