Which NFL coaches have been fired? Black Monday 2025

4 days ago 2

Black Monday has arrived, and with it, the day of reckoning for a handful of NFL coaches.

The day after the NFL regular season ends is the most common time for teams on the outside of the playoff bubble to make hard decisions about their team personnel and coaching staff. At this time each year, several head coaches find out they'll need to look for new jobs.

This year, a few NFL teams didn't even wait for the final whistle of the regular season to move on from some key members of their staff. The Tennessee Titans fired head coach Brian Callahan in October after a 1-5 start to the season. The New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll (and defensive coordinator Shane Bowen) in November. And shortly after the final "Sunday Night Football" game of the year kicked off, another name got added to the list of fired coaches.

That momentum is sure to only pick up during Black Monday, as a few other coaches have already lost their jobs by lunchtime on Jan. 5.

Here's which coaches have been fired so far as the 2025 regular season ends:

Week 1: Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa (18) makes a catch for a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers during the fourth quarter at Lambeau Field. The play was originally ruled an incomplete pass, but the call was overturned. Despite TeSlaa's effort, the Packers won the game 27-13.

NFL coaches fired

As of the morning of Jan. 5, six men that began the regular season as NFL head coaches have lost their jobs:

  • Brian Callahan, Titans (Fired Oct. 13)

  • Brian Daboll, Giants (Fired Nov. 10)

  • Raheem Morris, Falcons (Fired Jan. 4)

  • Kevin Stefanski, Browns (Fired Jan. 5)

  • Pete Carroll, Raiders (Fired Jan. 5)

  • Jonathan Gannon, Cardinals (Fired Jan. 5)

Brian Callahan, Tennessee Titans: Fired Oct. 13

Callahan did not make it through a second full season with the Titans. The former Bengals offensive coordinator led Tennessee to a 3-14 campaign in 2024 that netted the franchise the No. 1 overall pick. Armed with a new franchise quarterback as a result of that No. 1 pick, Callahan and the Titans began the 2025 season 1-5. The team's 20-10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders was the final straw, and Callahan became the first head coach fired during the season.

Brian Daboll, New York Giants: Fired Nov. 10

Already on the hot seat entering his fourth season in New York, Daboll made it four weeks longer than Callahan before his firing. The Giants had set a franchise record with 14 losses in a 2024 that saw former first-round pick Daniel Jones demoted to fourth-string and eventually released from the team. Like the Titans did with Callahan, the Giants armed Daboll with a new quarterback – first-round pick Jaxson Dart – but New York's 2-8 start sank Daboll's head coaching record to 20-40-1. It was the worst mark of any Giants head coach to lead the team for at least 50 games, and Big Blue decided to move on.

Raheem Morris, Atlanta Falcons: Fired Jan. 4

Morris made it through all 17 games of the Falcons' regular season – his second season in a second stint with the team – before Atlanta showed him the door on Sunday night. The Falcons put together back-to-back 8-9 seasons under Morris, who previously served as the team's interim head coach in 2020 after it fired Dan Quinn. Prior to firing Morris, the Falcons had won four straight games to close out the season but finished one win shy of earning a division title and playoff berth in a weak NFC South. Atlanta also fired general manager Terry Fontenot hours after its Week 18 win.

Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland Browns: Fired Jan. 5

Stefanski was the first victim the morning of Black Monday. The two-time NFL Coach of the Year winner (2020, 2023) failed to string together consecutive winning seasons in his six years serving as the Browns' head coach. In each of the two years he won Coach of the Year, Stefanski had led Cleveland to 11 wins and a playoff appearance. In the four seasons outside of those years, the Browns went a combined 23-45 with no playoff appearances.

Pete Carroll, Las Vegas Raiders: Fired Jan. 5

Carroll was the second NFL head coach ousted on Black Monday. Unlike the other coaches fired during or after the 2025 season, Carroll only had one year in charge before his firing. The former Seattle Seahawks head coach led the Raiders to a win in Week 18, but it was only the team's third of the season, tying them for the lowest win total in the NFL. Las Vegas also captured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft with its poor performance under Carroll in 2025.

Jonathan Gannon, Arizona Cardinals: Fired Jan. 5

Black Monday claimed a third victim by noon ET. Gannon led the Cardinals to three straight sub-.500 seasons in his brief tenure as Arizona's head coach. His most successful campaign was a 8-9 2024 outing in which the Cardinals finished in third place in the NFC West. Otherwise, Arizona lost 13 games in 2023 and 14 in 2025, leaving Gannon's head coaching record at 15-36 (.294 win percentage). The Cardinals' 3-14 record this year was tied with three other teams for the worst mark in the NFL.
