When does transfer portal open? Kansas State football's key dates, needs

MANHATTAN — Once the College Football Playoff quarterfinals are complete, the college football world will immediately turn its attention to the opening of the transfer portal.

The transfer portal, which is open from Jan. 2-16, will reshape rosters across the country, and it will be critical for new Kansas State football coach Collin Klein to address the Wildcats' most significant needs.

Earlier this year, the NCAA adopted a new rule that shrunk the number of transfer portal windows down to one. Players who intend to leave their current school and transfer can announce they plan to transfer, but can't enter the transfer portal until Jan. 2.

Here's a quick rundown of what you need to know heading into the portal opening.

When does transfer portal open?

The college football transfer portal opens Jan. 2.

With a coaching change, a new-look roster typically comes. That appears to be the case entering Klein's first year, although some names will remain.

As of this writing, Avery Johnson had yet to announce his intention to enter the transfer portal. If he were to, the quarterback would become priority No. 1, 2 and 3.

The most critical positions to hit will be along the defensive line and at wide receiver. The defensive front will be hit hard by portal entrants, and the Wildcats have to upgrade their pass-catchers. K-State may be in the market for 2-3 starting-caliber offensive linemen, as well. Additional impact players at running back, linebacker and the secondary will also be more than welcome.

How college football transfer portal works

Players who decide they want to leave their school can enter their name into the transfer portal on Jan. 2. Once they do, other schools can then actively recruit them to play. Players generally announce before the portal opening that they intend to transfer, but that doesn't become official until they are formally in the database.

Is there a limit on players Kansas State can get from the transfer portal?

No, there is no limit on how many transfers Kansas State can get out of the transfer portal.

What are transfer portal changes for 2026?

The NCAA adopted a new rule to the transfer portal earlier this year, minimizing the number of transfer portal windows to one. College football players can only start the process of transferring Jan. 2.

Under the new bylaw, the transfer portal remains open for two weeks and closes on Jan. 16, meaning players are not permitted to enter it after that date. But players who are already in the portal by that date are not required to choose their new school by then and can still choose where they want to play after the portal closes.
