The Los Angeles Rams’ loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 13 was a stunner. They were 10-point favorites and were coming off a 34-7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the week prior, looking like the best team in football.
But the Panthers pulled off the upset at home and shocked everyone, helping propel themselves to the postseason.

The Rams will get another crack at Carolina this Saturday in the wild-card round and this time around, they know what they have to do. Matthew Stafford talked about what the Rams learned from that loss to the Panthers during his appearance on SiriusXM’s “Let’s Go!” podcast on Monday, pointing to his three costly turnovers.
“What we learned, man, we moved the ball well. We just turned it over,” he said. “Obviously, I turned it over three times, one was down in the red zone. Chance at some points, get a tipped ball that ends up being an interception. That’s at least three, maybe seven if you can convert. Had an interception returned for a touchdown, which you don’t ever want to have. And then a fumble late. It was one of those games where we just never got in a great rhythm. We kind of took a couple of steps forward and then one big step backwards. So we’ve just got to go play a clean game. It’s early in the week, we’ll figure out what our game plan’s going to be, how we want to try to go attack and then just go trust ourselves. Have a great week of preparation, trust yourself, go play free and fast and if we do that, I think we’ll give ourselves the best chance to win.”
Their Week 13 loss came down to a handful of plays that went the Panthers’ way. The Rams allowed two long fourth-down touchdowns, had a pick-six and a red zone interception, and a fumble when they were in position to kick a game-tying field goal.
The Panthers deserve credit for making those plays, but the Rams beat themselves in a lot of ways on that Sunday.
