Nearly two decades later, the UNC basketball program still feels positive impacts from all-time great Tyler Hansbrough.
A 7-year NBA veteran, Hansbrough delivered his greatest impact in college ball. Hansbrough helped North Carolina capture the 2009 National Championship, won National and ACC Player of the Year honors in 2008, while averaging 20.2 points across his four seasons in Chapel Hill – where he remains the program's all-time leading scorer.

Hansbrough just added another accolade to his storied career on Monday afternoon, earning himself a spot in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
Joining Hansbrough in the 2026 class is former Tar Heel soccer standout Eddie Pope, storied college basketball coaches Kelvin Sampson and Leonard Hamilton, Greensboro native John Isner, Chip Beck, Heather Bergsma, Louis Breeden, Richard Huntley, Norvell Lee and Jerry Winterton.
Hansbrough, along with the 11 other nominees, will be inducted on Friday, May 1 in Greensboro.
Hansbrough, who tried his hand at broadcasting following his professional career, is now an avid podcaster and pickleball player. You can still catch Hansbrough at UNC basketball games, as he now lives in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina currently has another great power forward in the making, Caleb Wilson, who currently averages 19.3 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Wilson has a long way to go before reaching Hansbrough's status, but Wilson's current level of production has him on the right track.

Though Michael Jordan is the greatest professional basketball player to walk this earth, Hansbrough is the best collegiate player during his time in Chapel Hill.
