Trevon Diggs posts goodbye to Cowboys fans; details of exit now include rap concert rumors

As the dust continues to settle on the Cowboys' sudden release of cornerback Trevon Diggs, there's still a good bit of finger-pointing going around as both details and speculation come to light.

Despite how quickly things fell apart for the Cowboys and Diggs, the two-time Pro Bowler has issued a classy goodbye to the fanbase that cheered him on for six memorable seasons.

Though his dismissal from the roster frees up a big chunk of salary cap money and was widely expected, few saw the end coming with a game still remaining on the Cowboys' schedule. According to sources, Diggs requested to stay behind in Washington, D.C.- following the team's win there- on Christmas Day to get a jump on his holiday plans with family who resides in the area. That request was apparently denied by head coach Brian Schottenheimer, ostensibly to keep the team traveling together until players were officially turned loose for their long weekend. Diggs stayed behind anyway and did not fly back to Dallas with the Cowboys.

Diggs was waived on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he issued a farewell statement on Instagram:

"I want to thank the Dallas Cowboys organization for the opportunity they gave me and for changing my life, both on and off the field. I'll always be grateful for what my time here meant for me and my family.

I want to thank all the coaches and staff who believed in me, pushed me, and helped me grow as a player and as a man. I'm thankful for the relationships and brotherhood I built in that locker room- those bonds will always mean a lot to me.

With that said, I'm excited for a new journey and a fresh start. I'm motivated, focused, and ready for what's next.

To the fans who supported me throughout this journey, you are truly appreciated. Thank you for the love and support along the way.

God is great

Diggs led the NFL in interceptions in just his second season and went to his second straight Pro Bowl the following year. But injuries have kept him sidelined in recent campaigns; he's played in just 21 of the club's last 50 games. And off-the-field drama has played an increasingly large part in the Diggs saga ever since he signed a $97 million deal in 2023. From refusals to rehab with the team to his mystery at-home concussion and the months of secrecy that followed, and even his long-delayed "handyman" explanation that didn't quite wash with many, Diggs has burned through a lot of benefit of the doubt with even the fiercest fans.

Diggs's tumultuous tenure in the silver and blue has proven messy right up until- and even after- the end.

Even as fans debated whether Diggs should have been allowed to get a head start on his family plans given the geographical convenience, word spread online Wednesday morning that Diggs had also attended a concert given by rapper Shy Glizzy while in D.C. The two, who are reportedly longtime friends, were photographed on stage together in matching leopard coats; the images were posted on social media.

Some have speculated that the Cowboys' decision to waive Diggs stemmed more from his concert attendance than the travel accommodations and that Diggs may have even lied to the team about visiting family in order to play VIP celebrity at a rap show.

However, NFL insider Jane Slater, who has become something of a confidant for the former second-round draft pick, reports that Diggs told her that "he did stay back with family for Christmas and did attend the concert," adding the obvious explainer, "Both can be true."

Per Slater's X post, "He says he never lied about what he was doing or where he was and sent me plenty of time stamps and IG lives. ... The concert was Friday at 11pm..."

The bottom line seems to be that the Cowboys wanted Diggs to fly back to DFW with his teammates and coaches after the Christmas Day game. Diggs chose not to. He defied orders, started his mini-bye a few hours early with his family... and then the next night went to a concert.

In all likelihood, Diggs's fate was sealed the moment the plane door closed with Diggs not on board; timestamped photos of the Diggs family opening gifts and a cameo at a rap concert are just the juicy details that fans will use to color narratives about how another once-promising Cowboys career went off the rails in a hurry.

Diggs tells fans he's ready for a fresh start.

Cowboys fans are, too.
