Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy launching WTGL women’s golf league next winter

TGL, the indoor men’s golf league created by TMRW Sports — a company founded by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and sports executive Mike McCarley — announced Tuesday that they have created WTGL, an LPGA offshoot of the TV product.

The new league is set to launch next winter and will be played in the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

While there was initial buzz that TGL might integrate LPGA players into the existing product, the WTGL will be a completely separate league with teams of prominent female golfers.

“(WTGL) creates another global stage for our athletes — one that helps fans connect more deeply with them and continues to elevate the visibility and growth of women’s golf,” said LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler, who started as the 10th commissioner of the tour in July.

The LPGA’s choice to work with TMRW Sports and TGL aligns with Kessler’s game plan for the tour. So far in his tenure, Kessler has made an effort to increase exposure around LPGA athletes, starting with a revamped TV broadcast and a move away from tape delays. In an interview with The Athletic in November, Kessler said it’s the LPGA’s job to be “more interesting, to be more cutting edge, and to be more relatable,” in the age of an attention economy.

A broadcast partner for the WTGL has not been announced yet. But discussions with networks are underway, including with ESPN and other current LPGA partners, according to an LPGA spokesperson. WTGL is also exploring options with media partners around the globe, and the LPGA plans to utilize its strong global appeal in determining the next steps with the WTGL broadcast.

TGL is in its second season, with six teams of four PGA Tour players competing in a season-long competition, culminating in playoffs. TGL is in the midst of its two-year contract with ESPN. The stadium golf league said its season one audience drew one of the youngest audiences in sports, second to the NBA, with a median viewer age of 52.
