Three Utah coaches expected to follow Kyle Whittingham to Michigan

New Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham said on Wednesday he hopes to have 90% of his new staff assembled by the weekend. And, from the looks of it, he's about halfway there.

It was already revealed earlier in the week that running backs coach Tony Alford would be retained in Ann Arbor -- a big move as it keeps not only the current group together, but also incoming five-star tailback Savion Hiter -- but who else would be coming to Ann Arbor?

Whittingham confirmed on ESPN College GameDay on Thursday that Utah offensive coordinator Jason Beck would be joining his Michigan staff. And in the ensuing hours, CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz shared a trio of hires also set to come to U-M, all from the Utah staff.

Wide receivers - Micah Simon

The first is wide receivers coach Micah Simon, who helped Luke Wysong accumulate 840 yards in 2024, and Ryan Davis (Utah) get 725 yards.

Quarterbacks - Koy Detmer Jr.

Next, Zenitz says that the Wolverines are expected to hire Koy Detmer Jr., son of the former NFL QB, to join the staff. As Detmer was an analyst in Salt Lake City, it's unclear whether or not he will have the official on-field role as QB coach or if those duties will remain with offensive coordinator Jason Beck, with Detmer as an assistant or analyst. He's helped Devon Dampier show out this season, and that could pay huge dividends for Bryce Underwood.

Tight ends - Freddie Whittingham

The last one was highly expected, as Kyle's brother, Freddie Whittingham, will also be following from Utah to Michigan. He coached Dalton Kincaid, who current Wolverine, Zack Marshall, raved about. Given the tight ends already in Ann Arbor and what Whittingham has done with that position group, it should be a solid move that could help the unit continue to be elite.

With these moves, it appears as if Michigan is moving on from wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy and tight ends coach Steve Casula.
