The Transfer Portal: Week One Recap

4 days ago 2

The Boilermaker Football Staff has been busy. After one week, The Boilers have the 9th ranked Portal class. Here is a quick look, by position group.

Quarterback – 0

As it stands, Purdue appears as if it will run it back with Ryan Browne as the incumbent. Presumably, there is belief with better talent, that he will produce at a higher level.

Running Back – 2

Jerrick Gibson & Travis Terrell

Opportunity is there for both Gibson and Terrell. Gibson, a transfer from Texas, is a bigger back that can be a heavy hitter in between the tackles. He backed up two NFL running backs at Texas in consecutive years.

Terrell comes from Jackson State where he was electric in thr backfield and on special teams. At 5-7, 170 pounds he is the lightning to Gibson’s Thunder.

Purdue is looking to add more depth to the position still.

Wide Receiver – 1

Purdue added a top target from the portal with Asaad Waseem, at FAU he was a productive wide receiver both in the slot and on the outside. He should be considered the top dog for Purdue next season.

Tight End – 0

They have hosted a couple, but as of now, there is no commit to this position.

Offensive Line – 4

Micah Banuelos, Makai Saina, Nuku Mafi & Boaz Stanley

Purdue responded by losing four starting offensive linemen, by simply replacing them, arguably with upgrades at each position.

Banuelos and Saina come from USC, where both gained plenty of experience and played for OC Josh Henson.

Mafi started all 12 games this past season at Oklahoma State, at both RT and LT.

Boaz Stanley was the starting center for South Carolina and will replace Joiner, who went to USCe, the trade is now complete.

Defensive Line – 3

Rodney Lora, Curt Neal, Wisdom Simms

Purdue goes 3 for 3 on Defensive Linemen with starting experience.

Lora comes north from UCF, and is a mammoth up front. Simms produced at the FCS level, playing at NC Central.

The best of the group though, may be Curt Neal, who replaces Chops Harkless at nose.

Linebacker – 2

JoJo Hayden & Anthony Specca

JoJo Hayden joins Neal from Illinois, with plenty of opportunity to play on the Purdue defense. Hayden apparently was recruiting by returning DB, Smiley Bradford.

Specca comes over from Penn State to help shore up the linebacker group.

Secondary – 2

Mister Clark & Jaden Mangham

Arguably my two favorite additions thus far are in the secondary. One, they are talented players with plenty of experience. Two, Mister Clark is just a great name.

Mangham has had a productive career both at MSU and UM. Mister Clark is coming north from FIU, where he started at corner.

The Portal remains open until the 16th of January. Purdue has plenty of holes to continue to fill, but on the heels of one week in, they have done a great job!
