Texas A&M will face a new QB in Week 2 of the 2026 season

Texas A&M's 2026 season will kick off against Missouri State in Kyle Field, followed by a consecutive home test against Arizona State in Week 2, which, before the transfer portal opened last Friday, looked like one of the most challenging games on the schedule. However, after star quarterback Sam Leavitt entered the transfer portal, the Sun Devils are going in a different direction heading into the 2026 campaign.

This week, Kentucky freshman quarterback Cutter Boley, who finished the 2025 season as the Wildcats' starter, became Arizona State's prime target after he entered the transfer portal. After visiting the Sun Devils this weekend, it was revealed on Sunday that Boley committed to Arizona State and is slated to become the program's starting signal caller next season.

Sam Leavitt, who is slightly favored to switch places with Boley at Kentucky, is considered the more talented quarterback at this stage of his career. At the same time, Boley, who finished his second full season with 2,160 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and two rushing touchdowns, is a former three-star prospect whose 6'5" frame and notable arm strength provide a solid mold to replace Leavitt.

Still, Texas A&M's defense, which will look very different next season, could still face both Leavitt and Boley in the same season, and will hold a stark advantage at home, knowing that Boley is still developing as a reliable pocket passer. However, knowing that the Aggies will host Kentucky just a week later, if Leavitt commits to the Wildcats, I wouldn't be surprised if this were the more formidable matchup under first-year head coach Will Stein.

Either way, this change epitomizes what the transfer portal has become.
