Texas A&M's 2025 running back room will feature several new faces, likely including a future transfer addition, while two of the program's top options, led by senior running back Le'Veon Moss, will depart for the 2026 NFL Draft, while the son of Hall of Fame running back E. J. Smith has run out of eligibility, and he is attempting to continue his father's legacy at the next level.
Smith's college career began at Stanford, where his best game was in 2023, rushing for 218 yards and a touchdown and hauling in 33 receptions for 242 yards. However, due to injury issues, Smith was seldom available, resulting in his decision to transfer to Texas A&M for his final two collegiate seasons. Staying closer to home, Smith served as a rotational back during the 2024 season, while his workload increased down the stretch of SEC play.

Due to Le'Veon Moss's ACL and MCL tear sustained against South Carolina, Smith and then junior back Amari Daniels became the only options in the backfield. While Smith only averaged 3.7 yards per carry, he still racked up 207 yards on the year. With one more year of eligibility due to his previous injury-plagued seasons, Smith looked much healthier and faster during the preseason and served as the No. 3 running back during most of the season.
Rushing for 204 yards and a career high four touchdowns, Smith's lack of snaps during the regular season road loss to Texas is still confusing, as he produced one of the team's two touchdowns on the day, and looked like the better option compared to Rueben Owens that night. Still, Smith's improvement and steadfast leadership won't be forgotten after his two seasons in College Station.
On Monday, Smith officially declared for the 2026 NFL Draft, releasing a statement on X.
