Texas A&M basketball fell just short of a massive Quad 1 win against the Tennessee Volunteers, as the Aggies dropped their first Southeastern Conference contest of the season in double overtime, 87-82 in Knoxville.
Head coach Bucky McMillan had his squad firing on all cylinders and eager to topple one of college basketball's titans early in the contest. Entering the locker room, the Aggies boasted a 34-30 lead over the Vols. Tennessee's depth-filled roster out-rebounded the Aggies 60-35, which was a massive factor for Texas A&M to overcome and secure the win in the end, as McMillan suffered the first SEC loss of his coaching career in Bryan-College Station, Texas.

There is still much to be proud of from Tuesday night's efforts, however. The Maroon and White showed major resilience throughout the contest by battling with the No. 24 team in the country until the final buzzer sounded in the second overtime period of the matchup. Texas A&M shot 38% from the field and 31% from three-point range against the Vols, while also securing 12 steals. The Aggies showed some inconsistency at the charity stripe, but still had five players score in double digits.
Senior guard Jacari Lane led A&M with 20 points in the loss, while also racking up nine assists, three rebounds, two steals, and one block. Pop Isaacs and Rubén Dominguez combined for 31 points, seven rebounds, five assist,s and four steals in the road contest.
Tuesday night's result marks another road loss in the series against Tennessee, as the Aggies have not beaten the Vols on the road since 2020. There were many promising signs from McMillan's unit, including sharper shooting from the floor, which is integral in the high-paced, high-volume-shooting offense Texas A&M aims to put on the court.

Next up, Texas A&M will travel to Austin, Texas, for its second-consecutive SEC road contest against in-state rival Texas. It has been 24 years since the Aggies last beat the Longhorns in Austin. It will take another gritty performance to rewrite history against Sean Miller's group, who just pulled off a massive 92-88 upset over No. 13/No. 12 Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa. Texas A&M will get an additional opportunity to see just exactly what Texas is made of as they compete against No. 10 Vanderbilt on Wednesday night.
Tip-off against the Longhorns is set for 5 p.m. CT on Saturday at Moody Center in Austin. The game is set to be broadcast live on ESPN.
