Tennessee football announces new coaches with Jim Knowles assistants

Josh Heupel announced his 2026 Tennessee football coaching staff after firing multiple assistants and reshaping it for new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.

UT announced the staff changes on Jan. 2, three days after the Vols lost 30-28 to Illinois in the Music City Bowl to finish a disappointing 2025 season.

Heupel fired defensive coordinator Tim Banks and secondary coach Willie Martinez. Outside linebacker coach Levorn Harbin will no longer be part of the on-field coaching staff.

Heupel did not retain strength coach Kurt Schmidt, whose contract expires Jan. 31. And he did not retain assistant secondary coach Earnest Thomas, who was not under contract as a support staff member.

Heupel hired former Penn State co-defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter (co-defensive coordinator/secondary), former Penn State assistant Andrew Jackson (cornerbacks) and former Ohio State assistant Michael Hunter Jr. (edge rushers) because of their familiarity with Knowles' defensive scheme. Defensive line coach Rodney Garner and linebackers coach William Inge were retained.

All six defensive assistants have coached in either the College Football Playoff, BCS national title game or New Year's Six bowl. Most have been in several such games.

Heupel has not hired a new strength coach yet, but he has time. Players are on winter break until Jan. 20.

Heupel's entire offensive staff is set to return for the 2026 season after the Vols led the SEC in scoring (39.8 ppg).

Offensive coordinator Joey Halzle and wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope got raises and contract extensions through the 2027 season. Offensive line coach Glen Elarbee is under contract through the 2027 season. Running backs coach De'Rail Sims and tight ends coach Alec Abeln are under contract through the 2026 season. Special teams coordinator Evan Crabtree is under contract through the 2027 season.

Heupel needed to stabilize his coaching staff as the transfer portal opened on Jan. 2.

Why Jim Knowles wanted these new assistant coaches at Tennessee

The big headline is the new defensive staff reshaped to meet the specification of Knowles, whom Heupel hired on Dec. 11 to replace Banks.

Knowles, who spent last season at Penn State, is regarded as one of the best veteran defensive coordinators in college football. He has routinely coached one of the nation's best defenses over the past decade, most recently at Oklahoma State (2018-21) and Ohio State (2022-24) en route to the 2024 national title.

But Knowles also has the reputation of coaching a complex defensive scheme. Tennessee doesn't have time for growing pains, so hiring the right assistants to implement the system was paramount.

Here are the new assistant coaches on defense and when they previously worked with Knowles.

Anthony Poindexter coached at Penn State with Knowles

Poindexter spent the past five seasons as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Penn State, including the 2025 season under Knowles.

Poindexter has coached in college football for 23 years: Virginia (2003-13), UConn (2014-16), Purdue (2017-20), Penn State (2021-25), Tennessee (2026). He was defensive coordinator and safeties coach at UConn and Purdue.

Poindexter, a hard-hitting safety at Virginia, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2020. He was one of the best college players of the 1990s. He was the 1998 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and a two-time consensus first-team All-American.

Michael Hunter Jr. won Ohio State national title under Knowles

Hunter spent the past two seasons as an Ohio State assistant defensive backs coach, including the 2024 national title when Knowles was defensive coordinator. In 2021-22, he was Oklahoma State's assistant defensive secondary coach, including one season under Knowles.

In 2023, Hunter was Tulsa's defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach.

As a player, Hunter was a standout cornerback at Indiana and Oklahoma State, and he spent time on six NFL rosters from 2016-19. When Hunter played at Indiana, Inge was the Hoosiers' co-defensive coordinator.

Andrew Jackson went through Knowles' installation at Penn State

In 2025, Jackson served as a defensive analyst and assistant defensive line coach under Knowles at Penn State. He helped install the scheme, although Knowles never made it to the second season because coach James Franklin was fired.

Jackson was the defensive line coach at Fordham (2017), Old Dominion (2020) and West Virginia (2021-24). He was a defensive quality control coach at Mississippi State (2018) and defensive tackles coach at James Madison (2019). And he was a Penn State defensive line graduate assistant (2015-16).
