A few takeaways from Friday’s high school basketball action:

Triton Central wins a tough one

Triton Central handed Class 3A No. 3 Roncalli its first loss, 52-43.

The Tigers (7-2) played the final quarter-and-a-half without leading scorer Eli Sego, who picked up a technical foul. Triton Central went from down four to in control, led by 13 points from junior guard Jackson Faust. Brody Hartman and Eli Sego each had 11 points for the Tigers.

“We had really good patience on offense at times,” Triton Central coach Mark James said. “Our discipline was pretty good down the stretch and we played really hard. I have nothing but kudos. (Roncalli) has three really, really good players. I thought we did a decent job guarding them.”

It was the first loss for Roncalli (6-1), which had not played since a Dec. 23 win at Jeffersonville. The Royals struggled to score from the perimeter, particularly in the second half. Roncalli will play at Park Tudor on Saturday. Triton Central is playing at Waldron in the Shelby County tournament on Jan. 9

Fishers tournament results

It shapes up for a good day of basketball on Saturday at the Fishers tournament.

Class 4A top-ranked Fishers knocked off Fort Wayne Wayne 99-53 and Evansville North defeated Chesterton 49-47 on one side of the bracket and Evansville Bosse defeated Columbus North 67-55 and New Albany rallied for a 64-61 win over Lawrence Central on the other side.

Chesterton defeated Fort Wayne Wayne 77-45 and Lawrence Central routed Columbus North 80-44 in the consolation games.

Those results set up Evansville North (7-0) vs. Fishers (8-0) at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and New Albany (5-2) vs. Bosse (3-2) in another semifinal at 12:15 p.m. The consolation is at 6 p.m. with the championship to follow.

Lawrenceburg tournament

Two of the best teams in the state – Class 3A No. 2 Silver Creek and 4A No. 4 Plainfield – appear could be on a collision course at the Lawrenceburg tournament.

Silver Creek defeated Shortridge 74-45 and West Lafayette Harrison 81-51 for a 2-0 day on Friday, while Plainfield knocked off Guerin Catholic 71-39 and Castle 85-49. Noah Smith went over 1,000 career points on Friday.

Bloomington South (7-2) will play Silver Creek (10-1) at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Plainfield (9-0) will meet Fort Wayne Blackhawk (7-3) at 1 p.m. The winners of those games will play at 8 p.m. for the championship.
