Studs and duds from Washington Commanders' Week 18 win over Eagles

4 days ago 2

The Washington Commanders went to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles to end the regular season in Week 18.

The Eagles decided to rest their starters, and the Commanders were forced to start third-string quarterback Josh Johnson. As expected, it took a while for either offense to get anything going. The Commanders got a field goal and a score from Chris Rodriguez Jr. in the first half to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles controlled the third quarter, but the Commanders just wouldn't quit. There was some questionable time management from Dan Quinn and some frustrating penalties, but the Commanders were able to do enough to escape with the win.

With the Commanders' season over, let's go over studs and duds for one final time.

Stud: Terry McLaurin

Terry McLaurin has not had his finest season. In fact, due to injuries, the receiver has actually had the least productive season of his career.

However, McLaurin ended on a high note. The veteran surpassed 1,000 career receiving yards against the Eagles. McLaurin is now the fifth Washington player ever to accomplish this feat, and is the ninth in NFL history to do so. The receiver caught all four of his targets on the day for 57 yards. It's not the prettiest stat line of all time, but the veteran did what he needed to do.

Dud: Jacory Croskey-Merritt

Jacory Croskey-Merritt disappointed in the season finale. The rookie took 13 carries for just 29 yards on the day. It would be understandable to struggle against a tough Eagles' defense, but Chris Rodriguez Jr. performed better against the same unit.

Rodriguez ended with 65 yards and one touchdown, while averaging just over four yards per carry. Croskey-Merritt just failed to get anything going, and Rodriguez and Jeremy McNichols both performed better in the pass game as well. It was still a solid rookie season, but disappointing to go out with a whimper.

Stud: Jeremy Reaves

Jeremy Reaves is one of the leaders on this team, so it was nice to see him go out with a bang. The defensive back racked up seven tackles, two pass deflections, and an interception.

That interception led to three points for the Commanders, which proved to be crucial. The secondary has been a huge problem for the Commanders this year, but Reaves performed well on Sunday.

Dud: Deebo Samuel

While McLaurin made the most of his targets, fellow veteran receiver Deebo Samuel did not. Samuel received five targets and turned those into just two catches for 20 yards.

Luckily, the Commanders were able to get just enough offense elsewhere, but you definitely would have thought this game was a loss if you knew Samuel was going to end with 20 yards. The veteran had plenty of impressive moments this season, though, and it will be interesting to see if he is still in Washington next year.

Stud: Daron Payne

Daron Payne picked a great time to have a big performance. The veteran defender racked up four tackles, one sack, and one tackle for loss on the night.

Payne's presence was definitely felt on Sunday, and the Washington defense needed his contributions. The Commanders' defensive front was impressive as a whole, but Payne got consistent pressure and looked like his vintage self.
