The term 'Stetson Bennett-esque' has been used to describe Gunner Stockton from time to time throughout his time as Georgia's starting quarterback.
Stockton himself told me ahead of the 2025 season that he sees a lot of who he is in Stetson Bennett. And it just so turns out that the the feeling is mutual.

The legendary former Georgia quarterback was highly complementary of Stockton and said he saw a lot of similarities in their journeys.
"I'd love to hear what he said about me," Bennett laughed to me following the Rams' 27-24 loss to the Falcons on Monday night. "In terms of you saying he told you he thinks he has the same type of playing style and moxie as me, I totally agree. I love watching him and I'm one of the biggest fans of Georgia that there is."
Bennett lives and breathes Georgia. That much rang true in his decision to come to Georgia as a walk-on for a second time after going to Jones College, taking a chance against some of the toughest quarterback competition in the nation against then-Bobcats head coach Steve Buckley.
The rest is history as Bennett became perhaps the best college football player story of all-time. The quarterback still has the same sentiment toward Georgia, even if he's not able to watch the Bulldogs as much as he would like to at this point in his personal NFL journey.

"Saturdays are our traveling days, so I haven't gotten to watch as much of Georgia as I used to," Bennett said. "But the little bit I've watched, I loved."
Bennett sees Georgia as the same gritty team he came from, with a story that echoes his own experience with the Bulldogs in some ways. Stockton has been a part of that, with Bennett saying the Tiger, Georgia native is among his favorite players to watch.
"They've gotten better as time has gone on and early in the season," Bennett said. "They got battle tested but you see moments like that 4th & 6 pass Gunner threw against Tennessee. The scratching and fighting and clawing and figuring out a way to get it done when they had to."
Bennett will have his eyes closely locked on the Sugar Bowl matchup between Georgia and Ole Miss on Thursday evening. He couldn't be more confident in a quarterback who has been pinned by some as the next "Stetson Bennett" already.

"Just trying to go out there and do the best that you can for your team. It looks like Gunner has been doing that all year, and I can't wait to watch him continue doing that."
