Ben Davies made his first start of the season, spelling Djed Spence (and the injured Destiny Udogie) at left and scored his first goal for the club since December 2023 to give Spurs the lead in the 30th minute. Cristian Romero picked up the ball at the back post and cut it back to partner Micky van de Ven, who hit it right at Davies for the simple redirect. It was 1-0 for 50 minutes as Spurs unsuccessfully chased a second goal to put the game to bed, and they paid for it when Brian Brobbey smashed one into the top corner in the 80th.

The draw sees Sunderland (30 points) slip one place in the Premier League table, down to 8th after Brentford’s lopsided win, but still very much in the European race. One point is currently all that separates 5th-place Manchester United from Sunderland in 8th. Spurs are three points and five places below them, in 13th.
