Jan. 1—(Editor's note: These rankings are considered "pound-for-pound" rankings, similar to many rankings systems in boxing and mixed martial arts. They represent the best teams in southeastern Minnesota, relative to the class they play in.
1. Mayo (12-1)

The Spartans are ranked fifth in the state in Class 4A, a recent jump from seventh. The foursome of Amelia Mills, Maggie Dyer, Madalynn McLaughlin and Mia Banks is a tough one to stop. Mayo's 76-57 dismantling of No. 9-ranked Waconia on Dec. 11 was impressive. Mayo's lone loss this year has been to No. 6 ranked Eastview, 59-54 way back on Nov. 28.
2. Stewartville (6-1)
The Tigers have just one loss this season and a win against No. 7-ranked Northfield. Stewartville is ranked sixth. The Tigers have the reigning Post Bulletin All-Area Player of the Year, dynamic guard Audrey Shindelar. They also have Jaci Rath, who like Shindelar will play Division I basketball next school season.
3. Lourdes (9-1)

Senior forward/center Lauren Hust has been on a roll and is a big reason the Eagles are checking in at 9-1 overall. Hust recently had a 33-point game and is averaging 23 points and 10 rebounds. Lourdes is ranked No. 5 in Class 2A.
4. Caledonia (8-3)
The Warriors have some nice balance, with such standouts as Nicole Banse, Aubrey Klug and Kensey King. It was hit with a humbling loss recently to Wisconsin powerhouse La Crosse Aquinas, 57-41.
5. Byron (8-3)
Byron's Madison Ohm is playing every bit like the star she is (bound for Division I Marist University next season). The Bears handed Lourdes its only loss this season, 66-55 on Dec. 11. Byron is ranked No. 9 in Class 3A. Its losses have been to Maple Grove (No. 4 in Class 4A), Benilde-St. Margaret's (No. 1 in Class 3A) and Caledonia.

6. Plainview-Elgin-Millville (8-0)
Nobody has managed to beat the Bulldogs yet, who are led by routine 20-points scorer Alyvia Engler. In a schedule that hasn't been particularly challenging so far, P-E-M's closest win was still by a bunch, 72-59 over St. Charles.
7. Hayfield/Schaeffer Academy (9-2)
The Vikings just got done notching a pair of nice wins against two of the hotter teams in the area. They beat Spring Grove 69-51 on Dec. 30 and Blooming Prairie 65-44 on Dec. 29. The Vikings have balance and they also have the best shot blocker in the area, 6-foot senior Lily Morrisey. HSA is ranked No. 9 in Class 1A.

8. Red Wing (7-3)
The Wingers aren't ranked in the top 10 in Class 3A currently, but have spent some time there. Isabella Guetzlaff is one of the better scorers around, averaging about 18 points per game.
9. Southland (6-1)
Southland beat strong team Lanesboro 69-49 on Dec. 5, its most impressive win so far. The Rebels are nicely balanced, with six players averaging between 7 and 14 points per game.
10. Goodhue (8-3)
The Class 2A Wildcats have taken on a tough schedule, as is always the case with them playing in a Hiawatha Valley League that also includes a few Class 3A teams as well as some heavy hitting Class 2A outfits. The Christiansons, speedy twins Aubrey and Lola, seem to be heating up.
