It would be an understatement to say Texas A&M fans were less than thrilled when news broke that the program had elevated senior offensive analyst Joey Lynch to quarterbacks coach.
When Mike Elko signed his new contract, the expectation around College Station was clear: once key positions opened, A&M would use its expanded resources to lure top‑tier coaching talent from across the country. Outside of bringing Elijah Robinson back to Aggieland—a move universally praised—the rest of the hires have been solid, but not the splashy, needle‑moving additions many anticipated.

One of the most scrutinized vacancies was the quarterbacks coach role. After weeks of speculation and a handful of intriguing names circulating, the search ended in a direction few predicted. And while the reaction has been mixed at best, there are legitimate positives to this hire.
For starters, Lynch already has a working relationship with Marcel Reed and understands his skill set, eliminating the typical “get‑to‑know‑you” phase that can slow early development. He also brings nearly two decades of coaching experience, including play‑calling duties and quarterback development across multiple stops.
His track record is quietly impressive. Offenses he’s worked with have consistently improved, and during his time at Vanderbilt, the Commodores’ quarterbacks threw just six interceptions in 2022. Under his guidance as QB coach and offensive coordinator, Vanderbilt’s passing offense climbed from 104th nationally to 64th—a notable jump given the program’s limitations.
Is Lynch the splash hire fans were hoping for? No. But even amid frustration, there remains a contingent willing to trust Elko’s vision and see how this unfolds.
