Snap judgments and takeaways from Saturday’s high school basketball:
Fishers back on track
Is it fair to say Fishers was ever “off” track? Probably not, considering the Class 4A top-ranked Tigers have not lost a game.

But the team we saw Saturday night in an 81-60 win over New Albany in the championship of the Fishers Tournament looked dramatically sharper than the team of two weeks ago. The Tigers, playing without junior guard Jason Gardner Jr. for the next few weeks, took the lead early and were never seriously challenged in the second half.
Junior guard Cooper Zachary scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half and junior Levi Walker and senior Kai McGrew each added 16 points for Fishers, which improved to 10-0 after wins over previously unbeaten Evansville North (72-36) and New Albany on Saturday.
I will have more on Fishers and Walker in Monday’s Insider but the Tigers looked like a more intense version of themselves as the calendar turns from 2025 to ’26.
“To be as good as we want to be, we need Jason,” Winegar said of Gardner, who broke a bone in his hand in the win over Hamilton Southeastern on Dec. 19. “But I think in the long run, this can help us because other guys are getting confidence. Guys who weren’t playing as much are getting more playing time. (Gardner) is so talented he’s going to cover up some of our lack of execution. Now we’re forced to play the way we want to play – or I want to them to play anyway.”

Standout sophomore Noah Washington led New Albany (6-3) with 18 points. T.J. Washington added 17 points, including 11 in the first half. The Bulldogs defeated Lawrence Central 64-61 on Friday in the first round and Evansville Bosse 73-56 in the semifinal earlier Saturday.
Carmel knocks off Cathedral
Class 4A seventh-ranked Carmel rallied from a 17-point deficit to take down Class 3A top-ranked Cathedral 63-62 and remain undefeated.
We will have more on this game in a separate story. The Greyhounds (8-0) were led by 19 points from Cathedral transfer Cash Daniels and 13 from senior Evan Harrell. Julien Smith had 20 points for Cathedral (7-3) and Keaton Aldridge Jr. added 18.

Silver Creek wins Lawrenceburg tournament
Class 3A No. 2 Silver Creek defeated 4A No. 4 Plainfield 79-67 to win the Ray Furney tournament championship at Lawrenceburg in one of the top games in the state.
Silver Creek (12-1) completed a four-game run through the tournament with wins over Bloomington South, 63-47, and Plainfield. The Dragons have bounced back nicely from a loss to 4A No. 2 Crown Point in the first round of the Hall of Fame Classic at New Castle.
It was the first loss for Plainfield (10-1), which defeated Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian 72-57 earlier in the day on Saturday.
Other takeaways
Crown Point survives: Class 4A No. 2 Crown Point was tied at Brownsburg in the fourth quarter but took the lead on a three-point play by Bryce Peters with 1:31 left and held on for a 59-55 win. The Bulldogs improved to 8-0 with wins over Cathedral (75-72), Hamilton Southeastern (81-70) and Brownsburg in a three-win week.

Brownsburg building: It was an 0-2 weekend for Brownsburg, but the Bulldogs were either tied or led the game in the fourth quarter 4A No. 5 Pike in a 69-55 loss and in the loss to Crown Point. Chrishon Woodward led Brownsburg (6-5) with 15 points on Saturday. It will be interesting to see how the Hendricks County Tournament shakes out this week. Brownsburg and Plainfield are on opposite sides of the bracket.
Other tourney titles: Greenfield-Central defeated Batesville 52-51 to win the Batesville tournament … Whiteland took first place at the DeKalb Tournament with an 84-55 win over DeKalb in the championship game … Yorktown knocked off Greenwood 61-58 to win the Greenwood Classic.
Pendleton Heights wins: Pendleton Heights knocked off Zionsville 59-58 in overtime to improve to 7-2. The Arabians are looking like one of those sleeper teams to watch in the second half of the season.
