Faith Christian School girls basketball coach Geoff Harris said his daughter Lauren Harris, the team’s best player and perhaps No. 1 across the entire Yuba-Sutter region, is always striving to be better.

Harris dropped 38 on Tuesday and outscored Sacramento Adventist by herself in the first half to blow out the Capitals, 76-27 and jump out to 1-0 in the Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League in the league opener at the Lions Den in west Yuba City.

“What I love about (Lauren) is she is never satisfied and is always looking to see how she can enhance her game,” Coach Harris said.

Lauren Harris is only 142 points away from 3,000 in her career with a full slate of SMAL; Sac-Joaquin Section Division V playoffs and the Northern California Regional postseason left. Up next is Sacramento Country Day on the road Friday at 6 p.m.; followed by a return home to take on Cristo Rey on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Lions Den. FCS (11-1, 1-0 SMAL) has won 20 straight in league dating back to its last two runs through SMAL play. The team’s last loss was Valley Christian (Roseville) in January of 2024 at home.

“January 2024, right in this building,” Coach Harris said. “That was a painful loss; we haven’t forgotten.”

The Lions are at Valley Christian on Jan. 16.

FCS opened Tuesday night with an 11-0 run in the first; 25-9 after eight minutes and 45-16 at the break. Harris had 21 of her 38 at halftime to lead all scorers, while her senior No. 1 running mate, Presley Berry, added 17 of 20 in the first half, and top junior Mia Bryan scored seven of her 12 through 16 minutes.

“I think we were able to run a lot of offensive sets in different ways and get a lot of variety in our scoring,” Coach Harris said. “The way that Presley, Lauren and Mia scored had more randomness to it …I thought they played basketball well.”

For Sac Adventist, Gwen Rosich tallied 11 in the first half but was held scoreless in the second as the Capitals (6-4, 1-1) managed just 11 points as a team in the third- and fourth quarters.

Scott Tedmon’s squad heads to Roseville to take on Valley Christian tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m.
