Take a bow, Tyler Shough. The New Orleans Saints quarterback was named the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Month for December and January, a stretch where he went 4-1 while completing 114 of his 163 passes (69.9%) for 1,316 yards, scoring five touchdown passes and throwing just two interceptions. Shough also rushed 24 times for 135 yards and three touchdowns in that span.
Shough built a ton of momentum in the season's final weeks, and the Saints are taking that energy into the offseason. With vast salary cap resources to tap into in future years (thanks to their always-creative contract structuring) they can make some splash signings in free agency before spending a top-10 draft pick on a difference-maker this April. And all of that work is going to be done to support Shough as the team's starter.
This could go a long way to helping Shough's bid for Offensive Rookie of the Year, too. His chief competition for the award finished the season much more quietly but Carolina Panthers wider receiver Tetairoa McMillan could make a strong closing argument in the playoffs. We'll be watching to find out if Shough did enough in half a season to be named the year's top first-year pro.
