Rutgers football landed a significant addition to its quarterback room early this week, as transfer quarterback Dylan Lonergan officially committed to the Scarlet Knights, giving Greg Schiano’s program an experienced option under center heading into the upcoming season.
Lonergan arrives in Piscataway after stops at Alabama and Boston College, bringing Power Five experience and a high recruiting pedigree to a Rutgers offense looking to solidify its future at the position. A former four-star recruit out of Georgia, Lonergan was once regarded as one of the top quarterback prospects in his class, and his decision to commit to Rutgers signals both opportunity and mutual belief in the program’s direction.

Lonergan seldom took the field for the Crimson Tide, appearing in just three games over two seasons before winning the quarterback competition in Chestnut Hill last spring. He appeared in 10 games for the Eagles last season, throwing for 2,025 yards and 12 touchdowns with five interceptions.
Against Big Ten foe Michigan State, he threw for 389 yards and four touchdowns while completing over 75% of his passes. Lonergan also nearly led Boston College, which finished the season a dreadful 2-10, to an upset over ranked Georgia Tech, as he threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns.
However, he was benched at multiple points for backup Grayson James and struggled in a four-game stretch against California, Pittsburgh, Clemson, and Notre Dame. He did not throw a single touchdown and tossed three interceptions in that four-game span.
Lonergan visited Rutgers this weekend before making his decision, allowing him to meet with the coaching staff, tour facilities, and connect with current players, including wide receiver KJ Duff and others on the offense. Making the transfer decision even more interesting is that the Knights are set to visit Boston College in Week 2 next season, setting the stage for a potential homecoming of sorts.

Notably for Rutgers, this brings in competition for the starting job for redshirt sophomore AJ Surace, who seemed poised to take the position next season with the departure of Athan Kaliakmanis. The quarterback room now consists of Lonergan, Surace, redshirt freshman Sean Ashenfelder, and true freshman Xavier Stearn.
“I love AJ, I think he is a very talented, committed player,” Schiano said in December. “I don’t rule out anything as far as ‘is there going to be something that we do in the portal with a quarterback?’ Maybe. I don’t know. We are always looking, but I am confident. AJ has worked really hard. But there will be a competition.”
Surace, who has the most experience among returning quarterbacks, has taken just 34 snaps, while Lonergan took 487 snaps last season for Boston College. The Scarlet Knights are setting themselves up wisely for 2026, adding a quarterback with starting experience and insurance at football’s most important position.
