When the Tennessee Titans drafted Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, they learned quickly that they were getting a franchise quarterback. Ward conducts himself professionally and humbly, and he has done everything the Titans have asked him to do. His growth on the field has been evident despite the losses.
However, the state of the Titans being what it is, it makes it hard to gauge if Ward is truly the quarterback they think he is. One NFL executive opened up to The Athletic about the problematic situation.

“He’s running for his life most of the time,” the executive said. “His offensive line is terrible. You grade when things are done right, as much as you can. Throw out the negative plays when they aren’t his fault. Take some of those, too, to see where he can learn and fix things. You look for the flashes, and then hope they can really push it into next year.”
Part of the problem, even before Ward was drafted, is his throwing motion. He doesn't throw the ball with the standard motion, but he's been able to make it work over the last few weeks. Part of that is because the offensive line has improved, but part of it is his growth as a quarterback.
“The great equalizer is his ability to scramble and make plays,” an executive said. “Who knows if he’ll ever be strong on schedule. It’s hard to know how much it’s sustainable to make plays off schedule outside of the offense.”
The Titans have to hire a coach who isn't just all-in on Cam Ward, but one who has a scheme that fits Ward's style and allows him to play freely. Most believe the Titans should hire an offensive-minded head coach with a history of developing quarterbacks, but that's what they thought they were doing with Brian Callahan. A defensive-minded head coach with a strong offensive coordinator isn't a bad option going forward.

We won't know what the Titans' plan is for a head coach until the season is over, but even with other executives questioning Cam Ward's ability, it's clear to those in Nashville that he is the future of the organization. Now, the organization has to support him.
