Jan. 2—GRAND FORKS — UND offensive coordinator Isaac Fruechte will be leaving Grand Forks to coach the wide receivers at his alma mater, the University of Minnesota, according to multiple reports posted Friday.

Fruechte has been UND's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach the past two seasons, taking over for veteran assistant Danny Freund, who left UND for South Dakota State and later Washington State.

In 2025, Fruechte's offense averaged 32.9 points per game in leading the Hawks to the second round of the FCS playoffs and an 8-6 record. UND racked up more than 400 yards of offense five times, led by 564 yards against Indiana State.

Fruechte, who was the Hawks' interim head coach between Bubba Schweigert and Eric Schmidt, arrived at UND after spending two seasons at Winona State as the offensive coordinator.

A Caledonia, Minn., native, Fruechte played two seasons for the Minnesota Vikings and also had a six-game stint for the Detroit Lions.

Fruechte played three seasons for the Gophers, serving as team captain as a senior.

UND is also in search of a wide receivers coach. The job opening was posted to UND's website earlier this offseason with a closure date of Jan. 5.

UND's wide receivers coach in 2025 was first-year assistant Malik Bradshaw.

Schmidt has yet to indicate whether the offensive coordinator role will be filled internally or whether the second-year head coach will look outside the program for Fruechte's replacement.

UND's other offensive assistants remaining on staff are offensive line coach Trevor Olson, running backs coach D.J. Davis and tight ends coach Gordie Haug.

Haug, UND's assistant head coach, was Wyoming's running backs coach and executive director of recruiting from 2017 to 2024.
