Report card: Jets lose 42-10 vs. Patriots in Week 17

1 week ago 2

It was another brutal performance from the New York Jets in Week 17, this time to the New England Patriots, 42-10.

The Jets (3-13) were lifeless from the very beginning and looked completely disinterested. The coaching staff wasn't much better as it looked like they didn't even bother to put together a game plan on either side of the ball. The lone bright spot for New York was Breece Hall going over 1,000 yards rushing for the first time in his career.

Here is Jets Wire's report card for the team's loss to New England:

Passing Offense: D

Brady Cook is basically a lamb being led to slaughter each week, which is completely unfair to the rookie quarterback. While he didn't play well (152 yards, one interception), he was set up to fail as there didn't seem to be any type of plan for the passing game. Tyrod Taylor was inactive for this game and the backup was former Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker, who was signed earlier this week. Cook is serving his purpose as the quarterback to protect the tank. It's just a shame that the Glenn and his staff have no desire to coach him.

Rushing Offense: D

Outside of a 59 yard touchdown run with the Jets down 42-3, it was another forgettable afternoon for Breece Hall. While he did finish with over 100 yards rushing for the fourth time this year and surpassed 1,000 yards for the first time in his career, he hasn't been very effective since the November 4th trade deadline. It's doubtful the Jets will let him walk away as an unrestricted free agent this offseason for nothing, so expect him to get the franchise tag as the team tries to work out a new contract or a potential trade before the draft.

It was surprising that Tanner Engstrand didn't use Isaiah Davis more in the offense. We were led to believe this would be a running back by committee approach, similar to how the Detroit Lions use David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. But, Hall has gotten the bulk of the carries while Davis has seen very limited action. How can you possibly do a serious evaluation on Davis when he's only carrying the ball 2 or 3 times a game?

Passing Defense: F

Drake Maye threw five touchdowns and only two incompletions in two and a half quarters before Mike Vrabel decided to rest his quarterback. That's all you need to know about how awful the pass defense was on Sunday. Receivers were running wide open all afternoon. I've seen high school football teams tackle better than this defense. The Patriots were up 21-3 and went for it twice on fourth down....on the same drive!

While the Jets had quite a few players out, the veterans who did play looked like they could care less. It was another quiet afternoon from Jermaine Johnson, whose future in New York has become very shaky after a string of poor performances.

Rushing Defense: D

The Patriots rushed for 155 yards as a team with 82 of those yards coming from TreVeyon Henderson. Maye added 22 yards and averaged close to eight yards a carry. Rhamondre Stevenson (eight carries, 47 yards, one touchdown) averaged close to six yards a carry. A brutal effort from this unit that has really regressed a few weeks after Quinnen Williams was traded to Dallas.

Special Teams: B

Nick Folk made his only field goal attempt. They converted a fake punt for a first down and Austin McNamara is still one of the best punters in the league. This unit is the only one that shows up each week, which is sad to say.

Coaching: F

After this abysmal loss, Aaron Glenn actually had the nerve to say that this was the first game where he felt the effort wasn't there. He can gaslight the media and the fans all he wants, but they watch the games just like him and it's pretty clear this team hasn't put forth any effort since Tyrod Taylor was injured early in the Miami game.

I respect the fact that Glenn is committed to tanking for the high draft pick, but you still have to prepare for games and keep your team motivated. There was no game plan on either side of the ball and it showed. New England went out of their way to embarrass the Jets. Mike Vrabel even called his last timeout in the first half up 28-3 in an attempt to get the ball back and score one more time. The Jets never responded once to the disrespect Vrabel and his team were showing. I don't think they cared.

Aaron Glenn will most likely be back next season, but this defense and the coaching staff will need a complete overhaul. Any chance Chris Harris had of being the permanent defensive coordinator went out the window after a brutal performance. Veterans like Quincy Williams, Johnson and Hall have all checked out, which is what the Jets players normally do as soon as the going gets tough. There is no interest in changing the narrative about how awful the team and the organization are. There is zero interest in showing the fans who actually showed up that they care. Fans can't blame Woody Johnson for the product that takes the field. You wanted him out of the way and he obliged.

Perhaps this was all by design to move up in the draft. The Jets currently sit with the third pick after the Browns beat the Steelers. It's fair to wonder if Glenn is the right guy for this job or if the Jets should cut their losses after this season and let Darren Mougey pick his head coach. The Jets have one more game to close out the season in Buffalo, who suffered a tough loss to Philadelphia and lost the AFC East to New England. With the way the Jets played on Sunday, I'd be surprised if they cared enough to even get on the plane.
