Real Madrid legend moves a step closer to acquiring Sevilla – The Athletic

Not too long ago, Sergio Ramos was linked with a return to Real Madrid after he decided to put an end to his stint at Monterrey.

While Real Madrid did not entertain the idea, Ramos appears to have gone on a different tangent altogether and is now leading a monumental €400 million bid to purchase Sevilla.

Sergio Ramos leads race to acquire Sevilla

According to The Athletic, Ramos is leading a group of foreign investors, which includes an American fund, in a proposal to acquire 100% of the Andalusian club.

Ramos, who is currently a free agent after leaving Mexican side Monterrey in December, would not be the majority shareholder but is serving as the public face of the operation.

The bid values the club’s enterprise at €400 million, though the final deal is contingent on a precise valuation of Sevilla’s debt.

The report suggests that the club’s debt is estimated at around €180 million, but a dispute remains over whether the CVC Capital Partners loan should be counted towards this total.

While Ramos is eager to help his former team, the move could signal the end of his playing career in Spain. La Liga regulations prohibit a player from competing in a league where they also hold an ownership stake.

This means that if the takeover succeeds, Ramos would be ineligible to play for Sevilla or any other Spanish club this season.

The potential takeover comes at a critical time for Sevilla, whose finances have deteriorated significantly.

The club reported losses of €81.8 million for the 2023-24 season and was forced to take a €108 million loan organised by Goldman Sachs in March 2024.
