Rangers lose Igor Shesterkin, Adam Fox to IR stints in latest injury nightmare

The hot-and-cold Rangers will now need to keep pace in a competitive Metropolitan Division race without their starting goalie and one veteran leader for an extended period of time.

Igor Shesterkin, who suffered a lower-body injury in Monday's overtime loss to the Mammoth, is being placed on injured reserve, ESPN's Emily Kaplan reports. While the severity of his condition iunclear, Kaplan notes the Rangers' netminder avoided worst-case scenario fears.

To make matters even worse, defenseman Adam Fox is returning to the long-term IR list with an apparent lower-body injury, according to Mollie Walker of the New York Post. Required to miss 10 games, he'll be re-evaluated once eligible to play again, on Jan. 29 against the Islanders.

Shesterkin suffered the injury on a save attempt midway through a scorless first period. After stopping the puck with his pad, his right leg made contact with Mammoth winger J.J. Peterka's right skate toward the net, and the impact awkwardly knocked both players down.

After spending moments flat on the ice in clear pain, Shesterkin got up with assistance from a trainer, unable to place any weight on his left leg. The Rangers ruled him out shortly thereafter, as backup goalie Jonathan Quick went on to allow three goals.

As for Fox, his latest injury is more of a mystery. He logged 27 shifts across 23 minutes of ice time against the Mammoth, contributing three shots and forcing two takeaways.

It's the latest chapter to a nightmare season for Fox, who missed 14 games on long-term IR in December due to a shoulder injury. He returned to the lineup on Dec. 31, and in his three games back, he registered one goal and assist apiece.

Shesterkin currently owns a 2.45 goals-against average and .913 save percentage in 34 starts, while Fox ranks third on the Rangers in points (28 in 30 games).
