Rams defensive coordinator labeled Steelers potential next head coach

Will the Steelers really fire Mike Tomlin this year? Sports Illustrated senior NFL writer Albert Breer doesn’t think so. But if they do, he mentioned a name to keep in mind for the job in a Friday column: Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula.

“The Steelers, Ravens and Bills have generated conversation in recent weeks,” Breer wrote. “Is there any reality to it? I don’t think these would be firings. But there is some thought that Mike Tomlin could look at a reset, with the Pittsburgh roster potentially going through one soon too, and take a year or two in TV before returning to the sideline. And interestingly enough, Shula’s name has been connected to the Steelers, in case there is an opening.”

Shula, 39, has been part of the Rams coaching staff since 2017 and is in his second year as a coordinator. Currently, LA ranks 17th in yards allowed per game and eighth in points allowed.

Shula is the grandson of NFL great head coach Don Shula.
