Raiders fire head coach Pete Carroll after one season

It's done. The Las Vegas Raiders completed one of the worst seasons in franchise history. And thus the era of Pete Carroll comes to a close after just one season.

The Raiders announced Monday morning after their season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs that Carroll would not be returning as head coach. So, for the second straight offseason, the Raiders will head into the offseason with a coaching vacancy.

Carroll's brief tenure as head coach saw two coordinators fired along the way. Special Teams coordinator Tom McMahon was first to go. Then offensive coordinator Chip Kelly was let go 12 games into his only season in Las Vegas as the league's highest paid OC.

Those firings didn't improve the play on the field for the Raiders. They were on a three-game losing streak when McMahon was fired and a five-game losing streak when Kelly was fired. They came into their season finale with that losing streak at 10 games, at which point reports were already out that Carroll was likely to be fired, regardless of what happened in the finale.

The team will start anew with a new coaching staff along with a new quarter who they figure to select atop April's draft.
