The Las Vegas Raiders have identified a number of initial candidates for their head coaching vacancy. The search for Pete Carroll's successor is heating up. Arguably the most intriguing and riskiest candidate is Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb.
The 30-year-old Webb played quarterback at Texas Tech and California. He was drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft by the New York Giants. He bounced around the league before his retirement in early 2023.

Webb immediately got into coaching as the Broncos' QB coach in 2023. He spent two seasons in that role before adding the passing game coordinator title to his role in 2025. Webb has done a phenomenal job helping develop Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, helping lead the team to a 14-3 record, AFC West division title, and No. 1 seed this season.
Many analysts will see Webb as a massive risk. Understandably so. He's only been coaching for three seasons and that doesn't include any coordinator or play-calling experience. But it's worth acknowledging that every head coaching hire is a risk, and the Raiders just learned that the hard way.
There's no such thing as a safe hire. Carroll was seen as a conservative hire with a lengthy proven track record. He delivered a disastrous 3-14 campaign that earned the Raiders the No. 1 overall selection in the 2026 NFL draft.

The Raiders are almost certainly going to select a quarterback with the top pick. Perhaps Webb is a fantastic candidate to oversee and lead the development of that quarterback. After all, Webb played the position professionally, and has quickly helped Nix acclimate to the NFL.
There are no guarantees when hiring a head coach. The Raiders attempted to go the safe route with Carroll and it ended terribly. Perhaps Webb is the next Sean McVay or Kevin O'Connell. We won't know until he receives his opportunity.
