Quick Notre Dame transfer update following first weekend of action

The transfer portal window opened this past weekend, and for Notre Dame football, there was plenty of action.

There were more than a few updates earlier this weekend, and here is yet another one with some news that may have slipped the cracks, and that stood out on Sunday aside from Joshua Burnham making his choice and the Irish kicking the tires with bring in another quarterback.

The Irish are still looking for their first commitment of the cycle, but that doesn’t mean the coaching staff hasn’t been putting in work with many players. Below you’ll find a quick recap of the of the transfer portal news that has Notre Dame significance.

Notre Dame missing out on Michigan State receiver Nick Marsh

This one hurts, as the Irish were set to host Marsh starting today. It very much looks like Indiana is going to be a thorn in Notre Dame’s side for the time being.

Former Notre Dame commit wide receiver Isiah Canion enters the portal

It’s always interesting to see what former Irish commits are faring, and for Canion, a change of scenery was needed. He had a very solid season this past fall, catching 33 receptions for 480-yards and 4 touchdowns. There is a need at the position for Notre Dame, and there is a past relationship. This is one to monitor.

Former Notre Dame wide receiver Rico Flores enters the portal again

You have to wonder if Flores has some regrets about leaving Notre Dame after one year, as his two seasons with UCLA he had almost the same exact stats as he did with the Irish. It’s pretty clear that the talent is there, and the California native could look to continue to stay on the West Coast.

Notre Dame to host Rutgers wide receiver Ian Strong

With the loss of Marsh, bring in Strong for a visit makes perfect sense. They have very similar frames, as it’s clear that Notre Dame is looking for a bigger receiver. Strong has been great the last two seasons, as he’s had a combined 1,438-yards and 10 touchdowns. He would be a great plan B for the Irish.

Notre Dame loses out in race for Iowa State cornerback Jontez Williams to USC

Another transfer who had scheduled a Notre Dame visit for next week was Williams, but he won’t be making the trip. Like Marsh, this one hurts since there was a clear interest between both parties.

Tulsa tight end Brody Foley will visit tomorrow

The Ohio native is familiar with Indiana, as he played with the Hoosiers for three years before leaving for Tulsa. Foley was mostly a special teams guy, but made the most of his lone season with the Hurricane, catching 37 passes for 528-yards and 7 touchdowns. He’ll start his visit today.
