Pirates Biggest Roster Need Revealed

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been aggressive in improving the roster this offseason. They have added Brandon Lowe, Ryan O'Hearn, Jhostynxon García, and Jake Mangum to their lineup to complement Paul Skenes and the young pitching staff.

However, in a recent Bleacher Report article, the Pirates are urged to add more and upgrade their shortstop position.

"The left side of their infield is still weak, with Nick Gonzales and Jared Triolo the current projected starter. A trade for someone like CJ Abrams, Alec Bohm or Josh Jung would provide a nice boost, while Eugenio Suárez could also be a fit in free agency," Joel Reuter wrote.

Abrams would be the most natural fit of the three, as he plays shortstop. Abrams is a trade candidate from the Washington Nationals. He slashed .257/.315/.433 with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs. He also had 31 stolen bases.

The 2024 All-Star is under team control through the 2028 season and could be a solid addition to the Pirates' lineup.

The current options at shortstop are Nick Gonzales and Jared Triolo. In the 2024 season, Gonzales slashed .260/.299/.362 with five home runs and 30 RBIs in 96 games.

Triolo played in 107 games, slashing .227/.311/.356 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs. The 27-year-old is a solid depth player, but they could use a player like Abrams starting at shortstop.

The other candidates in Alec Bohm, Josh Jung, and Eugenio Suárez are intriguing, but they are not primary shortstops.

Bohm has played third base and first base in his career. His bat would be an upgrade, as he hit .287/.331/.409 with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs in 120 games for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2025.

Jung has only played third base in his career with the Texas Rangers. In the 2025 season, he slashed .251/.294/.390 with 14 home runs and 61 RBIs.

Suárez would be the biggest addition to the lineup, as he had an incredible 2025 campaign. He hit .228/.298/.526 with 49 home runs and 118 RBIs. The 2025 All-Star spent some time at shortstop earlier in his career, but is more of a third baseman.

The Pirates have had a good offseason thus far, and if they are able to add a talented shortstop, they could have a scary lineup.
