Packers playoff ticket prices higher for game in Chicago than Philadelphia

2 hours ago 1

The Green Packers will play in Chicago or Philadelphia in the wild card round of the NFC playoffs, but first they'll have to endure a no-meaning game against the Minnesota Vikings in Minneapolis.

The Packers are locked into the seventh and last seed in the playoffs and will play the No. 2 seed on Jan. 10, 11 or 12. The Bears hold the No. 2 seed as of Dec. 29. If Chicago wins or Philadelphia loses their final games (or both lose), it will be Chicago. The Bears play the Detroit Lions in Chicago this coming weekend and the Eagles host the Washington Commanders.

Aspirational pricing on Dec. 29 showed an average get-in price of $615 for a wild card game in Chicago. That's quite a difference from the average get-in price for a Philadelphia wild card game, which was $252. That might be a reflection of the fact the Bears have not been to a playoff game in five years and haven't hosted one in seven. The Eagles, on the other hand, qualified for the playoffs eight of the last nine years and are the defending Super Bowl champions.

Last season, average wild card get-in price, which saw the Packers traveling to Philadelphia, was $263 on the Monday before the game, dropping to $195 two days later.

Initial playoff ticket prices are set by the NFL, which also gets the proceeds. The Packers said earlier this year that if a wild card game were held at Lambeau Field, the face value of tickets would range from $125 to $177.

What is special about this game? Nothing. The game will be played because it's on the schedule, but it won't change the post-season prospects for either team. The Packers are guaranteed the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoffs and the Vikings and their fans will be watching the playoffs from the comfort of their living rooms.

This is the first time the Packers and Vikings closed the regular season since 2015 and for Green Bay fans who fancy a drive to the Twin Cities, to say nothing of Minnesota and western Wisconsin fans, this is an affordable game.

To the extent that it salvages a disappointing season, the Vikings might have motivation in this game. They've won four in a row after what looked like a unsalvageable collapse at mid-season. The Vikings defeated the Detroit Lions 23-10 on Christmas Day with a whopping net passing of 3 yards. The victory guaranteed the Packers a playoff spot.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur has not said if he'll rest key players for this game, and with all the injuries they've experienced, not everyone that might benefit from a break will get one. In addition, heading into the playoffs with a four-game losing streak isn't ideal either.
