Oklahoma football is adding a prominent NFL name to its coaching staff.

The Sooners are hiring former Dallas Cowboys star tight end Jason Witten as its tight ends coach, according to multiple reports. The 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist has spent the last five seasons coaching Liberty Christian High School in Argyle, Texas.

Witten will replace former tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley, who was fired on Jan. 1. He will coach on the same staff as Sooners running backs coach DeMarco Murray, whom Witten played with on the Cowboys from 2011 to 2014.

Oklahoma has added Florida transfer Hayden Hansen and Colorado State transfer Rocky Beers in the transfer portal so far this offseason.

Witten, 43, enjoyed a 17-year playing career with the Cowboys from 2003-20. He played sixteen of those seasons with Dallas, with his final year coming with the Las Vegas Raiders.

He finished his NFL career with 1,228 career catches for 13,406 yards, 74 touchdowns, four All-Pro selections and 11 Pro Bowl selections.

Witten played for another SEC school during his collegiate career, starring for Tennessee from 2000 to 2002. He finished his Vols career with 68 career receptions and 797 receiving yards, despite not moving to offense until midway through his freshman season.

Oklahoma is not scheduled to play Tennessee during the 2026 college football season, but the teams are set to play in 2027.
