Ohio State quarterback has plans to enter the transfer portal

1 week ago 2

In news almost everyone saw coming, Ohio State quarterback Lincoln Kienholz has decided to enter the transfer portal. Kienholz was asked earlier in the week if he thought about looking for a new home at season's end. He told reporters he was still evaluating all his options, but most felt he would most likely be on his way out after not seeing much playing time in his third season in Scarlet and Gray.

Kienholz was a four-star prospect coming out of Pierre, South Dakota, and was ranked as the No. 11 overall quarterback in the 2023 recruiting class according to 247Sports. He would be thrust into action as a true freshman in the 2023 Cotton Bowl against Missouri after Devin Brown went down with an injury early in the game. He didn't fare well in his first real action, completing just 6 passes for 86 yards.

After a tough battle in spring practice and fall camp with Julian Sayin, some thought Kienholz might be able to win the starting job, but to no avail. He was used sparingly, even though Ryan Day showed some packages early on that allowed the athletic quarterback to use his size, strength, and running ability. However, that package faded as the year went on. Now the Buckeyes will be without Kienholz moving forward.

The move will put five-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair in firm position to be QB2 heading into next season. Sayin has at least one more year as the starter, but the departure of Kienholz leaves a void in terms of depth in the quarterback room.
