The last six Super Bowl winners: provided by ESPN.com

According to ESPN.com, the last six Super Bowl-winning teams scored 31, 31, 23, 38, 25 and 40 points in order from 2020 to 2025. No team scored lower than 23 points en route to securing the biggest prize in the NFL (the last Super Bowl to feature two teams to score lower than 15 points each was 2019's matchup 13-3 victory for the New England Patriots vs. the Los Angeles Rams).

In the regular season of the aforementioned Super Bowl campaigns, those same teams had offenses with rankings of:

  • 2019 - Kansas City Chiefs: 379.2 yards per game (sixth-best), 28.2 points per game (fifth-best

  • 2020 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 384.1 yards per game (seventh-best), 30.8 points per game (third-best)

  • 2021 - Los Angeles Rams: 372.1 yards per game (ninth-best), 27.1 points per game (eighth-best)

  • 2022 - Kansas City Chiefs: 413.6 yards per game (best), 29.2 points per game (best)

  • 2023 - Kansas City Chiefs: 351.3 yards per game (ninth-best), 21.8 points per game (15th-best)

  • 2024 - Philadelphia Eagles: 367.2 yards per game (eighth-best), 27.2 points per game (seventh-best)

Five of the six previous Super Bowl winners have fielded top-10 offenses in both total yards and scoring. The only exception was Kansas City's offense in 2023, which ranked 15th in the NFL in scoring. Regardless, the statistics bear out the fact that teams with top-scoring units have claimed the NFL's #1 spot for a little more than the last half-decade.

This information is relevant for the 2025 Houston Texans, as their offense has been the crux of most concern-based conversations regarding their postseason ambitions.

Through 17 weeks, Houston's offense averages 326.3 yards per game (20th) and 22.9 points per game (16th). If they were to win a Super Bowl this season, it would be the lowest scoring average rank for the victors since 2023's Chiefs squad. Likewise, their 20th rank in yards would be the lowest for a winning team since the 2015 Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos and their 16th-ranked yardage mark (355.5).

With only one game left in the regular season, the Texans most likely aren't going to shoot up any offensive production charts. They are who they are at this point, but they have been making adjustments throughout the season that have helped them become more formidable vs. opposing defenses.

Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud and offensive coordinator Nick Caley have their work cut out for them as the team awaits their AFC Wildcard assignment.

To their credit, Houston is 10-0 when their offense scores 20 or more points in a game. However, they are 1-5 when they don't (they've eclipsed at least 23 points in seven out of 16 games played).

Thus, moving the football is a major point of emphasis if this team has any hopes of raising a Lombardi Trophy in the Bayou City this year. For them, just enough consistency is the name of the game.

Thankfully, they have an all-time great defense backing them up to make the proposition more realistic.
