North Carolina entered the transfer portal window Friday needing a quarterback and quickly found its guy.
Former Wisconsin quarterback Billy Edwards has committed to Bill Belichick and North Carolina out of the NCAA transfer portal. Edwards, who is in Chapel Hill for a visit, will be in his sixth season of college football in 2026. On3 reported it first.
Edwards spent one year at Wisconsin following three at Maryland. However, he began his career at Wake Forest but never played.. Edwards was the starter for Wisconsin going into the season but hurt his knee in the season opener, and missed nearly the entire rest of the season rehabbing the ailment.

He attempted to play against his former school, Maryland, in September. Edwards drew the start for Wisconsin but exited before the end of the first quarter after aggravating his knee injury. He did not appear again for the Badgers in 2025.
Before transferring to Wisconsin, Edwards was Maryland’s starting quarterback. He opened 11 games for the Terrapins in 2024 and closed the year with 2,881 passing yards and 15 touchdowns against nine interceptions.
Edwards appeared in 26 games overall at Maryland, throwing for 3,317 yards and 19 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. He began his college career at Wake Forest, redshirting as a true freshman after not seeing game action.
Carolina hopes Edwards can come in and get results as the Tar Heels finished with one of the worst offenses in the FBS in 2025. They ranked 119th nationally in scoring (19.3 points per game) and 129th in total offense (288.8 yards per game). This resulted in offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens getting let go.
