NHL star Devon Toews is officially on Team Canada for the 2026 Winter Olympics — but with an asterisk.
The Colorado Avalanche defensemen and his wife, Kerry, are expecting their fourth child, with a due date just nine days before Hockey Canada's first game at the Olympics, according to Sportsnet.

After Toews was named to Canada's roster on Wednesday, Dec. 31, along with his teammates Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, the NHL star made it clear where his priorities lie.

"If my baby hasn’t arrived, I’m staying here," he said while speaking with reporters on Wednesday ahead of the Avalanche's game against the St. Louis Blues. "That’s 100% what I’ll do."

Toews added, "I’m not leaving until that baby’s here and everybody’s home safe."
"I think [my wife’s] excited, I think she’s excited for me to have this opportunity. It doesn’t come every day, so she’s excited for that, but I’ll be there for that baby, for sure," he continued.

The hockey player confirmed that his wife is due in February and said that it is "something that’s way more important to me than making an Olympic team."
“Being there for that is something that’s on my mind more so than showing up for my country. I’ll be there when that time comes, but right now, I’m there for my wife," he continued.

When asked about his "biggest accomplishment for 2025," Toews said it has "nothing to do with hockey."

"Honestly, being a dad and being a father is my biggest accomplishment in life," he said. "Being able to watch my kids grow and help them grow is the best thing that I'll ever do."
