NC State trounces Stanford, 74-46

Women’s hoops celebrated the new year with a blowout win over Stanford on Thursday afternoon made possible by a hounding defensive effort that held the Cardinal to their worst offensive performance of the season. NC State is 3-0 in ACC play, and all three wins have been by 20+ points.

The game was sloppy and both teams struggled with turnovers, which in State’s case may have had something to do with the long holiday layoff, but Stanford had no such excuse, having played just four days prior. Zoe Brooks and Zam Jones were aggressive attacking the rim and the team shot just nine three-pointers, while Stanford ended up settling for a lot of jumpers, especially as things went south for the Cardinal in the second half.

Very little came easily for Stanford, which shot 4-23 from three and made under 38% of its twos. NC State’s offensive execution was just a lot better.

State is one of four schools to start 3-0 in ACC play, and is up to No. 11 in Torvik. The league looks as wide open as ever without a dominant team at the top and four teams between No. 10 and No. 17 in Torvik. Stanford is near the top of the second tier, though State made the Cardinal look quite a bit worse than that.
