MSU women's basketball fends off Illinois for sixth straight win

EAST LANSING — Rashunda Jones delivered down the stretch and helped the Michigan State women's basketball team prevail in another tight Big Ten battle.

Jones went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 40 seconds, which included a pair of free throws with 8.6 seconds to play to help the No. 19-ranked Spartans fend off Illinois for an 81-75 victory on Sunday, Jan. 4 at Breslin Center.

The victory was the sixth straight for the Spartans and gave Robyn Fralick her 250th career coaching victory.

Kennedy Blair led the Spartans with 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. She was among four players in double figures for MSU (14-1, 3-1 Big Ten.). Jones had 15 points, including seven in the final 2 minutes, and Grace VanSlooten added 15 pints and nine rebounds before being limited in the second half by an upper body injury.

Emma Shumate added 11 points for MSU, which ended Illinois' program-record 11-game winning streak.

Maddie Webber had 17 of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter to lead Illinois, which was coming off a victory over No. 6 Maryland on New Year's Day.
