MADISON — After Morris Hills was announced as the repeat boys champion at Morris County Relays, senior Nicholas Falcone needed a quiet moment. After holding up the plaque and leading the Scarlet Knights' cheers, Falcone knelt beside the track at Drew University's Simon Forum. He said a few words to Bob Byrnes, a longtime track and field coach and official who died unexpectedly on Dec. 18.
Falcone wore blue and yellow crystal butterfly hair clips next to his ponytail in memory of Byrnes, who he said had been the starter at Morris Hills' meets for four years.

But then Falcone, who had handed off the championship plaque to a teammate saying, "Anybody want this? I'm going to break it," jumped back into the celebratory photos. He had anchored the Scarlet Knights' winning 4x400, sprint medley and distance medley.
"I'm better in relays. I run for other people," Falcone said. "There's three guys with me, and a whole team behind me. This is my favorite meet of the year. You both need so much depth and star power too. We need everybody."
The Roxbury girls won the 4x400 to end the meet, and edge Randolph by one point, 42-41. It was the Gaels' only victory at Morris Hills Relays. However, they finished second in the sprint and distance medleys and pole vault, third in shuttle hurdles and fifth in the 4x200.
"I love this meet," Roxbury coach Derek Bischoff said. "I come from a team sport background, and this is when (track) feels like a team sport. You don't always get it in this sport."
